This spring, LIVE partnered with a group of environmental science students from Willamette University to distribute oak saplings to our members. Their group, called Growing Oaks, was formed to promote the growth and protection of the Oregon Oak. This spring collaboration was the beginning of a larger project aimed to help restore native oak habitat to the Willamette Valley.
This summer and fall, we are ramping up a project to collect Oregon White Oak acorns at LIVE wineries following a similar model as the Recycling Hubs.
Six wineries have volunteered to act as Oak Hubs throughout the Willamette Valley. We ask that you gather as many Oregon White Oak acorns this fall as you can, and drop them off at an Oak Hub closest to you. There you will find supplies to pack them in a baggie with vermiculite to then be picked up and potted by students and volunteers.
Our goal is to gather upwards of 100,000 acorns to pot and distribute 10,000 oak saplings when they are ready. To aid you in your collections we have prepared a helpful guide below.
This is meant to be a fun and impactful project and one that you can share with your families and customers. If you have any questions about our work, you can contact LIVE or Growing Oaks.
We are also looking for volunteers and donors to help with potting and donations for greenhouse materials. If you would like to learn more, please contact us.
